The Ransomware Group Nobody Should Be Worried About Yet

ransomware group TITAN says it has built an ai tool capable of reading 700GB of stolen files an hour, sort out the most damaging ones, and hand its affiliates a ready-made extortion case. before the world shits its pants and panics, two things. that number is a sales pitch, and the group making it is a nobody.

start with their size. TITAN launched in apr 2026, and in 4 months it has listed 24 victims across 10 countries, most in italy. put that against the actual leaders. qilin posted around 100 victims a month for most of this year. the gentlemen took june with 94 in a single month. TITAN's entire existence, all 4 months of it, adds up to less than what the top group does in 4 weeks.

this is only a self-professed titan. it is a new face in a crowded room, shouting at people who are not yet looking.

there were 93 active ransomware groups in Q2 2026. that is the most ever recorded. the top five crews swallowed more than 40% of all victims and everyone else was fighting over the rest. most new brands in the ecrime ecosystem never make it. they show up, post a handful of victims, and vanish or rebrand within months. that is the base rate TITAN is running against, and nothing in its numbers thus far suggests it has the capacity to hold the line.

so why the loud ai claim? because it is the cheapest way for a small group to look big. attach yourself to the scariest story in the industry, promise a spec nobody can check, and hope affiliates and journalists repeat it for you. and yet here i am, repeating it like an idiot.

the 700-an-hour figure has not been verified by a single researcher, and ransomware crews inflate their capabilities constantly. it helps with recruiting new affiliates, as well as frightening victims into paying fast. taking their word for it is the exact favor they are asking for.

here is what i find rather frustrating. there is a real ai-in-ransomware story, and TITAN is not it. independent analysts who track this, not the gangs, say the same thing. i have said it before. multiple times.

ai is not inventing new attack methods. it is making the existing ones cheaper and faster. especially the boring middle work like sorting through stolen data and tightening ransom negotiations. that change is real and it is measured. it just does not look like a press release like TITAN is attempting to do here.

you want evidence of ai actually changing ransomware, look at the gentlemen, not TITAN. when their operation leaked, researchers found first-party proof they used ai coding assistants to build their management panel in about three days. no marketing, no round number, just a real group using ai to move faster. that is the story. the established crew doing it silently, while the new crew advertises a version it may not even have.

and the reason all of them are leaning on data analysis in the first place is a number that actually is verified, and it is falling. ransom payment rates hit a multi-year low near 23% this year, down from 85% in 2019. locking files stopped producing ransom payments like it used to.

the pressure moved to exposure. find the one hella damning document to force a payment, the lawsuit, the regulator, the headline. that is the work groups now want a machine to do, whether or not TITAN's machine is real.

so read TITAN as what the data says it is. a minor player using the ai narrative as a megaphone, in a shrinking-payment, overcrowded market where the loudest new name is almost never the most dangerous one.

the real threat is quieter, older, and does not put its best number on a flyer.
